You’re Not Writing a Newsletter. You’re Building a Tribe.
A month ago, as I flew from Abu Dhabi to Bangkok, I listened to Ben Thompson on the How I Write podcast.
Ben writes Stratechy—an estimated $5m/year newsletter.
One thing he said leapt out at me:
Now, I don’t make $5m/year.
But this is the idea I’ve followed to make $500k/year, which ain’t exactly chump change either.
It’s easy to worry about online saturation. Every niche seems crowded, and carving out your own slice of attention feels like an impossible mountain to climb.
But the Internet is a big place.
It’s hard to fathom the potential. For example, if you serve 0.001% of the online population, that’s 50,000 potential customers. And like Kevin Kelly once said, you only need 1000 true fans for a highly profitable business.
The key word is ‘fans’.
Because the success of your business is directly related to how well you can unite a specific group of people around your ideas.
It’s why, when you write, you must lean heavily into your unique philosophy.
Your worldviews, your beliefs, what lights you up, and what pisses you off.
Because we form tribes based on how we think and feel.
Like Thompson said, once you earn audience loyalty, you can build a highly profitable business solving their problems.
It’s why I’m proud of the Magnetic Email system.
Every step is designed to turn your writing into a magnet for your tribe. Ideas like picking the right problems to solve, sharing engaging stories, proving your points without overwhelming, and pitching without putting your readers off.
When you write like this the compounding effect is staggering.
You build relationships and earn a reputation. This means your audience will look forward to your emails. They act on your ideas. And importantly, they invest in your offers.
Make your writing a magnet.
