My housemate and I decided to become entrepreneurs at the same time.

It was during the first COVID lockdown in 2020.

We were tired of trading time for money. We both felt there was more to life than the 9 to 5.

One quote from Naval Ravikant set us down completely different paths:

”Fortunes require leverage. Business leverage comes from capital, people, and products with no marginal cost of replication (code and media)… Code and media are permissionless leverage. They're the leverage behind the newly rich. You can create software and media that works for you while you sleep.”

I don't care about making a fortune. I care being free.

My housemate chose to code. I chose to write.

Unfortunately, things didn't go well for him. In hindsight, he stepped too far outside his circle of competence. He had issue after issue that led to him changing direction years later.

I almost failed too.

It took me 13 months to hit 1,000 followers and 18 months to make 1 dollar. And there’s been plenty of fumbles throughout.

T’was not a pretty start.

Although, if it took twice as long, I'd still do it again.

Why?

Because if you like to write and care about freedom, ‘media’ leverage is amazing.

Consider this:

In 2024, I grew my audience 35x faster than my first year of writing.

But it took me 1/20th the effort because I have a body of work I can repurpose.

And when I started writing my newsletter, one email took 4 hours. I sucked. I was lucky to sell anything.

2 months ago, I wrote five emails in 4 hours and grossed $13,640.

The key to succeeding at media is to combine an audience with assets that scale. This creates a disconnect between the effort you put in and the results you get out.

You need three things:

1. Get good at social media content (High Impact Writing)
2. Get good at writing relationship-building sales emails (Magnetic Emails)
3. Get good at building scalable products

This style of business is not for everyone.

It takes patience. And you must get good at communicating persuasively and effectively.

But if you love writing and enjoy serving an audience?

It's the most fun you'll have.
