Why Hiring a Writer for Your Business Is a Bad Idea
Last week, I hopped on a call with a successful dentist.
He’d built his clinic to $6m annual revenue and now does 3 days per month of clinical work.
Which would’ve been my dream when I was drilling teeth.
But he bought the call because he wasn’t happy.
He’d just hired a reputable copywriter to write his email sales sequence.
…And hated it.
People said it didn’t sound like him and felt too salesy. And he was now struggling to work out his brand voice and message.
This is one reason every entrepreneur should not hire a writer.
It might feel smart. You save time and effort in the short term.
But long term, it costs you big time.
For example, I’ve become friends with David Deutsch this year. He’s one of the world’s best copywriters.
He told me that the people who write the best copy are not the copywriters…
But the business owners.
Because no one can write in your voice like you can.
And no one cares about your business like you do.
And no one understands your customers better.
And honestly?
I would hate needing to rely on someone to drive the growth of my business. If you can write, you’re in such a strong position compared to the crowd.
Because here’s what people get wrong.
Writing is not just about creating content.
Every day you sit and type, you become a deeper thinker. A smarter marketer. A smoother salesman. A more empathetic leader.
That’s why writing can be tough—it forces you to improve crucial communication skills.
But the juice is worth the squeeze.
It’s why most writers who get good stop writing for other people. Once you’ve got the keys to the kingdom, you ain’t renting out the palace.
And nobody has ever fallen in love with someone else’s ghostwriter.
Learning to write might take time, but it’s worth every word.
