I Am a Terrible Writer
I recently hired a coach, and she called me out yesterday.
Why?
I’ll explain.
We were discussing how I could help one of my clients. She explained I should give people a daily action for accountability.
After all, consistency drives results.
But I was struggling to decide a daily goal for my client, so I asked:
“If you had to give me a daily action, what would it be?”
We hadn’t set a daily target together because, for better or worse, I run like a robot with no life. Output is not the issue.
But then she said something revealing:
“Well, for you it would be to write your book every morning. I know how happy it makes you—and how important being an author is.”
“But I already know you’re doing that.”
I went silent.
For reference, I started writing my first book, Digital Freedom, on the 1st Feb. It’s been so much fun, and I hadn’t missed a day of writing it.
… Until this week.
Truth be told, I stopped on Saturday.
Why?
I could blame the stag do I went on, which has ruined my liver.
But really, it was getting overwhelming. I’m launching two products in the next two months whilst finishing off a cohort.
So I let the book take the backseat.
I figured I’d pick it back up in June when my plate was empty.
When I told her, she looked shocked. Rightly so. As the words left my mouth, I was too.
Because I’ll be honest [FIRST NAME GOES HERE], I really want to be an author.
I love the business side of writing. Coaching, courses etc. But books have changed my life, and I’d love to have that effect on other people.
But you don’t get what you want by magic.
You have to drag your dreams into reality. That means making sacrifices. It means pushing yourself further.
I learned this when I first found writing.
I sucked, but I loved it. I was working 50 hours a week as a dentist. So I told myself I had to write for 2 hours every morning before the commute.
It was the most tiring two years of my life.
But it worked.
And I’m hoping to have the same effect for the next step of life.
So I picked up Digital Freedom again yesterday morning. And it feels great to get back to it.
This is a gentle reminder:
There is no better time to do something than now. “Later” is an illusion. You should start your day building your dream else it will stay precisely that:
Just a dream.
And if you do get too tired or too busy, I’ll leave you with an idea I love:
Slow down, but don’t stop.
Repetition gets results. Don’t underestimate the power of persistence on a long enough time frame.
Keep at it,
Kieran
