Advice for Entrepreneurs Who Love Business but Hate Selling

    By Kieran Drew

In the summer of 2022, I pitched my first high ticket offer to an unsuspecting victim.

I say victim because I ambushed him with an anxiety-ridden, incredibly awkward sales pitch.

I rarely discuss this with anyone because it makes me cringe.

But you and I are friends. And there’s a good lesson attached.

    Here’s the story.

It was May 2022. Brian reached out for help with content.

    So I put together a $3k three-month program.

    The offer was solid.

I was terrified of underdelivering. I would’ve walked his dog and done his grocery shopping if he asked me to.

But this is where the cracks began.

Because you shouldn’t be needy when you sell. I knew this as a dentist. But as a writer, I really wanted the win—which sets you up for the loss.

We hopped on a call. He expected a chat.

Instead, I bombarded him with a PowerPoint explaining what he would get in Casa de Kieran.

As I shared my screen, I saw the surprise in his eyes.

    My stomach sank.

But I was committed now. So I proceeded to deliver a 20-minute shakey-voice monologue.

When I got to the pitch, I was just relieved for it to end (now I know how my dates feel).

    Evidently he was too.

As you can imagine, he didn’t throw his money at me. He said he’d think about it.

I had my Hormozi script ready for this line.

But instead, I said no worries.

    And we never spoke again.

Now, the usual entrepreneurial advice is to take failure as part of the package and get back on the horse.

    But I was traumatized.

So I thought, screw that and focused on something that had caught my eye:

    Email.

Because I’d stumbled across email marketers that were blowing my mind.

Not the pushy sales bros, but the smooth storytellers.

People who could get me to buy expensive things with simple writing.

I figured if I wanted to avoid sales calls for the rest of my life, I’d better get good at doing that instead.

So I deep dived into email storytelling and focused on building relationships.

In September 2022, I took another stab at high ticket.

    This time, it went different.

    I sent 3 simple, story-driven emails.

6 readers snapped up the slots. $3k a pop. I had to turn people away because of the demand.

    And the best part?

Zero sales calls. Just a Google Doc sheet.

Now, I’m not hating on sales calls.

But writing is selling at scale. It’s high leverage.

Because good writing is a magnet for great customers.

For reference, my business is close to crossing 7 figures in under 3 years.

Aside from poor Brian, there have been no more calls. I’ve never sent a single cold DM or email either.

The key is understanding how to build desire before you pitch your offers…

And how to sell without ruining your reputation.

Because regardless of whether you sell face to face or through writing…

Your success depends on getting people to take action without putting them off.

Which is why you’d enjoy the fourth step of the Magnetic Email system—where I share 5 simple ways to pitch your offers without sounding sleazy.

This includes how to smoothly pivot from your stories and ideas into selling so you can send emails that build relationships and revenue at the same time.

If you want a business where you spend more time writing and less time on calls, you’d love the frameworks inside.
